D vs E

The passage says the following:

Both women and men underestimated the amount of fat in their diets and overestimated their intake of most other foods.

Now, here's (D).

(D) Men in the study estimated their daily intake of fruits and vegetables to be significantly lower than it in fact was.

We see that (D) is contradicted the bolded portion of what the passage says. Whereas (D) says the men ESTIMATED their intake of fruits and vegetables to be LOWER than it was, the passage says that they OVERESTIMATED the intake of "most other foods," which we can tell included "fruits and vegetables."

The passage also says the following about men:

Men underestimated their fat intake by half, and though they met the recommendations for breads, they fell short in all other categories.

Now, here's (E).

(E) Most men in the study did not consume the amounts of fruits and vegetables that the nutritional guidelines recommended.

(E) is supported by the bolded portion of the passage. After all, if men "FELL SHORT in all other categories," meaning other than breads and fat, then, as (E) says, they did not consume the amounts of fruits and vegetables that the nutritional guidelines recommended.

The correct answer is (E).
