The EMPOWERgmat team has dissected the new OG2016 and documented the new questions, 'location shifted' questions and removed questions in the new book. If you're interested in going directly to the new practice content (25% of the book), then this PDF is a must-have. We've posted it for download in our Blog:

The answer to your immediate question is 'no' - it's not necessary to purchase any of the Official Guides. However, those books are some of the few resources that actually offer Official questions that once appeared on the actual GMAT, so there's a reasonable argument to be made that those questions are the most realistic on the market. Even if you're just using one of those books for additional/optional/random practice, they can be quite helpful (and the cost to purchase them is relatively low).
