Hi!
Is the difficulty level on the official practice exams 1&2 lower than the one on exams 3,4,5? I took them five and got a range of 160, which confuses me A LOT. Here are my scores for each:
#1: 610(Q36,37)
#2: 640(Q41,V36)
Official test: 550(Q38,V27)
#3: 480(Q33,V23) (50% completed)
#4: 500(Q29,V30)
#5: 620(Q46,V29)
Below are some details about my prep, if someone could help me identify what's wrong with my prep and eventually give me pieces of advice on how to improve my verbal score and finish the exam on time...
In August last year, I took the official practice exams 1 and 2 without preparing (I had only read through the OG to see what kind of questions to expect). I scored 610(Q36,37) and 640(Q41,V36) respectively. Last October, I took the official GMAT test, without further deep prepping. I scored 550 which kind of disappointed me, but I didn't have any specific score goal at this time since the program I initially wanted to do did not require a specific minimum score.
Now my plans have changed and I need to take the GMAT test again, last minute (only one month of prep), and score 640+. I started studying a lot (I mean, A LOT, 10+ hours a day for the past 3 weeks). During the first week,I took official practice exam #3 and scored... 480(Q33,V23)!!! I believe the reason is that I only did half of the test. I was so focused on answering correctly every single one question (which I did though) that I could only answer 50% of quant and about the same in verbal.
A week later, I took practice exam #4. This time, I wanted to finish the exam not to have a penalty, which led me to rush and I made careless math mistakes such as forgetting a 0, writing that 2,000+40,000=40,200... I scored 500(Q29,V30). I reviewed all my mistakes, they were literally so stupid, even in verbal.
I decided to subscribe to
TargetTestPrep's one-month study option.
Today, I took practice exam #5. I scored 620(Q46,V29), which I believe is a bit more representative of what I can do without feeling stressed and overwhelmed in terms of quantitative. However, I still ran out of time and had to guess the last 7 questions of the quantitative part. For the verbal part, I finished in advance for some reasons... Usually, I always need to rush and guess the last questions because of the lack of time.
On the one hand, I am really confused regarding this HUGE range of scores, especially since I got a higher score for the first two practice exams for which I had not prepped at all. I know stress can really hinders my performance but still. With the amount of work I am putting in, I do not understand.
On the other hand, it seems like I literally cannot progress on verbal. I really don't know how I scored so high for the first two official practice exams. My main issues are (1) the lack of time and (2) tiredness. After the break, I am literally exhausted and have to read several times the sentences in RC to fully understand. Almost all the mistakes I make are in RC, and sometimes in CR. I completed all exercises of the OG book for RC and CR, which I answered correctly most of the time. I reviewed all my incorrect answers and the comments associated with each. I started reading articles on The Economist everyday. Still, it seems like my verbal is stuck at 29/30...
Does anyone have any advice on how to improve my verbal? I would love to be able to score again at least V36 and therefore 640 like my second attempt...
Thank you in advance!
PS: I am a non-native English speaker, but I saw most people who took the GMAT are non-native as well, so there must be another reason for me not to be able to improve in verbal...
PS2: I am taking the GMAT on May 31, which is in a week and a half.
PS3: Thank you for the amazing work you're all doing on this forum. GMAT club is the best website ever
