Hello Rich,
Thanks for the reply!

I am in fact just beginning with my prep.
I am going through the manhattan series at a fairly fast pace. Almost done with the quant books.
Apart from those I am planning to go through the OG series as well as the CR Bible.
I have taken one MGMAT CAT with zero preparation and scored a 580 (Q42 V29)
Clearly I need to work on Verbal more than anything, and time management.
I am aiming for a 700 plus score.

As for your questions, I am planning to take the GMAT towards the end of January, and apply to schools for the 2016 intake.

Hi Dakshan,

It sounds like you're just starting out. Is that true? Have you done any studying so far?

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from mba (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to spend a little time familiarizing yourself with the basic content and question types that you'll see on the GMAT, then that's fine, but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

The GMAT2015 and GMAT2016 books have the same number of questions in them - the GMAT2016 'replaced' about 25% of the content in the GMAT2015. Both books are relevant though, so you can (and should) use either of them during your studies. Each of the subject-specific books (Quant and Verbal) include different questions (if you're looking for additional print materials).

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Hi Dakshan,

A 580 is a solid baseline CAT score (the average score on the Official GMAT hovers around 540-550 most years). With your Scaled Scores, you have a great opportunity to pick up points in BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections.

Many Test Takers who use a 'book-heavy' study approach get 'stuck' at a particular scoring level, so we'll have to keep an eye on your CAT results going forward. It's also important to make sure that you take each CAT in as realistic a way as possible (so take the FULL CAT - including the Essay and IR sections, take it away from your home, at the same general time of day as your Official GMAT, etc.).

1) When are you planning to take your next CAT?

Hello everyone,

I'm starting my GMAT prep which is going to take place over the next 8-10 weeks, which I hope is enough for a 700+ score.
Quant is my strong suit as I was really good at math in school, but I've been out of touch for about 2.5 years now so I'm pretty rusty.

Can someone tell me the differences between OG2015 and 2016? I have the 2016 edition which says it has 25% new questions. Does this mean OG2015 has some content thats different from 2016 as well?
Also should I purchase the Verbal and Quant reviews too? I have heard they have just some additional content and have the same questions as the main book otherwise.

Thank you! :)

Hi Dakshan,

OG2015 does have some content that is different from OG2016 -- you'll see some questions were dropped and new ones were added. The number ordering was also shuffled around.

We would recommend going through the OG first to see how you feel before getting the other review books. If you are looking for additional questions, you may also be interested in the Practice Pill Platform: https://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-test/

I want to take a second CAT, but I think I should wait until I finish going through the material first.
After that, what should I be doing between CATS, before attempting the next, apart from going through errors, of course.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Dakshan,

If you're going to stick to your original schedule (which would complete your studies in 5-8 weeks), then you're going to have to take your CATs at regular intervals (1 FULL CAT every 1-2 weeks). It's okay if you have not practiced all of the concepts that will appear on Test Day yet, but there are some skills that you can 'build up' only by taking FULL CATs, so you shouldn't wait until the end of your studies to take those CATs.

Yes Dakshan, you should certainly wait till you finish going through the study material once as Official CATs are limited in number and you would not want to waste them.
After the mocks, make sure that you take out at least 2-2.5 hours to analyse the mock CAT thoroughly and identify the reason for the incorrect problems.

Each mock CAT will tell you more about your problem areas. In between the tests, try to focus more on those areas by re-reading the concepts and solving more problems.
And always make sure that you take Full length CATs including the AWA and the IR sections.
