Oliver has twice as many marbles as Ted. Ted has twice as many marbles as Merrill. If the total number of marbles among the three is 28, how many marbles does Ted have?

A. 4
B. 8
C. 12
D. 14
E. 16

Solution:

We can let x = the number of marbles Merrill has. Thus, in terms of x, the number of marbles Ted has is 2x, and the number of marbles Oliver has is 2(2x) = 4x. We can create the equation:

x + 2x + 4x = 28

7x = 28

x = 4

Thus, Ted has 2(4) = 8 marbles.

Oliver has twice as many marbles as Ted. Ted has twice as many marbles as Merrill. If the total number of marbles among the three is 28, how many marbles does Ted have?

A. 4
B. 8
C. 12
D. 14
E. 16

Solution

    • Let us assume that Merrill has “m” marbles.
      o So, the number of marbles that Ted has = 2m
      o And, the number of marble that Oliver has = 2*(2m) = 4m
We need to find the number of marbles that Ted has i.e. 2m.
    • All three together have 28 marbles.
      o This means, \(m + 2m + 4m = 28 ⟹ 7m = 28 ⟹ m = 4\)
      o Hence, the number of marbles that Ted has \(= 2m = 2*4 = 8\)
Thus, the correct answer is Option B.
