I'm overwhelmed by the support. Thanks everyone!
Some follow up information:
Background:
Business undergrad in the U.S. - 3.8 GPA
Work experience at an Advertising agency - 2 years
Looking to apply in 2008 to a business school with a strong marketing concentration.
Here are my test scores leading up to the exam. Also, where can I find the score estimater?
1st time prepping
Kaplan diagonostic - 680
Kaplan 1 - 720
Kaplan 2 - 690
Kaplan 3 - 620
Kaplan 4 - 740
Kaplan 5 - 720
Kaplan 6 - 640
Kaplan 7 - 730
Kaplan 8 - 740
Powerprep 1 - 740
Powerprep 2 - 750
Can't remember my 800score.com scores....did them piecemeal though.
2nd time around
MGMAT 1 - 690
MGMAT 2 - 740
MGMAT 3 - 710
GMATPREP 1 - 760 *3 repeats from the OG in both Quant and Verbal
GMATPREP 2 - 770 *Again 3-4 repeats in each section
GMATPREP 3 - 760 *VERY inflated, 1/3 of questions repeated
A couple more thoughts:
1. Kaplan wasn't worth the $$. If I had to do it again, I would have gone with
Manhattan Gmat or another test service. I didn't feel that Kaplan went into enough depth in their sections. Also, their verbal/quant material wasn't reflective of the exam.
2. Having an
error log is crucial. The first time I took the exam, even though I spent a lot of time going over my mistakes, I didn't keep a log. Big mistake...which i realized just before the exam. Two days before the exam, I went back to some old tests and realized that I was making the SAME mistake...i didn't learn from them at all! The second time around, my
error log and my flashcards really helped me take internalize my mistakes.
3. If you are weak on SC, then you have to get
MGMAT's SC book. Understanding the concepts was necessary for me to increase my hit rate to 80/90%.
4. Time yourself when you're doing practice questions. The pressure to finish will help prepare you for the real thing
5. OG is a must. Buy either the 10th or 11th edition. The 10th has more problems though and overlaps with the 11th so I would recommend going with the 10th.
6. Post as much as you can on Gmatclub. Wrestling through questions and trying to understand answers will help you really know the math/verbal concepts. Club challenges are also great! Great set of question and I highly recommend using them if you're trying to get high 45+ Quant score.
7. Remember, it's not about quantity but quality. It's pointless to go through question after question if you don't understand/take to heart that concepts that are being tested. This also means remember why you made the mistake so you don't make it again. (this was my problem with SC...which is why i went back to the basics).
8. Read through GMATCLub to get ideas/advice on study strategies and plan of attack. After my first exam, I realized that I really didn't do enough research into what the best test prep strategies were. The second time around, I read every post on this forum trying to glean any insights/knowledge I could.
Overall, don't stress...set a study schedule and stick to it. Those late nights are starbucks really paid off for me...and it will for you too. This journey has been long but I'm amazed at everything i've learned through it. Thanks so much guys! I really couldn't have done it without you....'kay, it's getting cheesy now so it's time to end this post. I'll try to stick around and answer any questions anyone has....feel free to PM me too.
