On a certain test, the average grade for a class was 80. If 10% of the class scored 95 and 20% scored 90, what was the average grade for the remainder of the class ?

1. 65
2. 70
3. 72.5

On a certain test, the average grade for a class was 80. If 10% of the class scored 95 and 20% scored 90, what was the average grade for the remainder of the class ?

1. 65

(10*95 + 20*90 - x*70 )/100 = 80 -> x= 75

Average grade of 80
Total points scored 10*80 = 800

1 95 and 2 90s = 265
800-275=525
535/7=75

pick numbers ... 10 kids in class, test score out of 100

sum of scores is 80*10=800

10% of 10 is 1, 1 child got 95. 10% of 10 is 2, 2 children got 90, total of 90x2=180

total scores for those children are 180+95=275

800-275=525

525/7=75 (divide by 7 since we are only ineterested in left over scores)
