Re: On a wedding catering service, An experienced chef can prepare a servi [#permalink]
Given: On a wedding catering service, An experienced chef can prepare a service for a wedding in 8 hours while an novice chef would finish the preparations in 12 hours.

Asked: If the catering service employs the same number of novice and experienced chefs, then how many chefs would it take to prepare a wedding service in 1 hour and 36 minutes?

Number of hours required by 1 experienced chef and 1 novice chef to finish preparations = 12*8/(12+8) = 12*8/20 = 4.8 hours
Number of chefs required to prepare a wedding service in 1 hour and 36 minutes = 2*4.8/1.6 = 6

(A) 2
(B) 3
(C) 4
(D) 6
(E) 8

Number of novice = number of experienced chef = x
\(\frac{x}{8} + \frac{x}{12} = \frac{1}{(8/5)}\)
\(\frac{x}{2} + \frac{x}{3} = \frac{5}{2}\)
\(\frac{5x}{6} = \frac{5}{2}\)
x = 3

Answer B.

It should be x+x = 6 because we are asked how many total chefs. novice + exp = 3 + 3 = 6

Yeah...!!
I made the age old GMAT mistake. :roll:
Thanks for point out.

Experienced Chef's efficiency = 1/8 per hr
Novice Chef's efficiency = 1/12 per hr

Together: 1 Experienced + 1 Novice = 1/8+1/12 = 5/24 per hr

No. of Chefs * Rate * Time = Work

2 * Rate * 1 = 5/24 => Rate = 5/48

No. of Chefs * Rate * Time = Work

Let the No. of Chefs = x
Time = 1 H 36 min = 8/5 hrs

x * 5/48 * 8/5 = 1

x = 6 (D)

Re: On a wedding catering service, An experienced chef can prepare a servi [#permalink]
first is to get the unit production per hour of E chef and N chef: 1/8 and 1/12
let the same number of E and N is x
the unit production will be x(1/8+1/12) = 5/24 *x
total use 1+36/60 hours to complete is aobut 8/5
5/24 *x (unit production per hour ) * 8/5 ( hours) = 1
so x=3
result is using 3 E_chef and N_chef to complete it in 1+36/60 hours.
answer is 3+3=6
