I would go with D on this one.
A B and C all have ambiguous referent "his"
E is wrong because it uses present participle "arriving" to refer to an action which happened in the past. Present participles refer to current conditions

My answer was C (1.5 min), but I am convinced with (is convinced with correct usage? or should we use convinced of?) your reasoning.
I will stick to C till OA is published though!
Also, could you please let me know the grammar books that (or which??)YOU refer to?

you are right. C has no ambiguity because "friends" is plural and "his" can refer only to Bill himself. Again, I did not see the "s" coming after friends
