I thought a 20% profit means profit = 20%* cost price, not profit * marked price

Let the Marked Price be M, Selling Price be S and Cost Price be of each t-shirt.

Case 1: Discount of $120 on 3 t-shirts

3*(M-S) = 120
M-S = 40
or S = M-40

Profit% = (Total money made - Total Cost)/Total cost * 100%
= (3S-3C)/3C *100% = (S-C)/C *100%

Case 2: Buy 4 get 1 free

Profit% = (Total money made - Total Cost)/Total cost * 100%
= (4M-5C)/5C *100%

Profit% = same in both cases.

Thus (S-C)/C *100 = (4M-5C)/5C *100

On solving, 100% cancels out on both sides and so does C
and finally, we get 5S = 4M
putting S = M-40
we get M = $200 (D)
