E proceds trees with their rings. The first three use the wrong construction.

The choice is only between (C) and (E).I go for (C) because (E) seems to be incorrectly framed with change in meaning.

Not sure. either C or E. E sounds better to my ears but it has 'IS' in the middle. Dont know which subject that IS is referring to?

Among the surest indications on Earth of sunspot cycles IS believed to be the rate at which trees grow

C is my choice.

E,

I think C has a modifier problem and also possibly a comparison problem too (between rate of growth and rings in their trunks):

the rate at which trees grow is believed to be among the surest indications of sunspot cycles; as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks.

it is not about E is lengthy. if you look at E carefully, there is no subject in E.
Those parts cannot act as the subject.

With C, the sentence would be

On Earth, the rate at which trees grow is believed to be among the surest indications of sunspot cycles,as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks.

The way I look at it, there are 2 clear modifier problems:
1. The rate at which trees grow on Earth
2. sunspot cycles as seen in the rings.

I'm still sticking with E. Can one of the big guns please give a detailed explanation?

I agree with Kripal. C has a misplaced modifier. Need explanation for this one.
