On the first day of an alpine slalom competition, the total combined time of Grace’s two runs was 1 minute and 57 seconds. If twice the number of seconds in her first run was 30 seconds more than the number of seconds in her second run, what was her time in seconds for the first run?

Algebra? No thanks! Let's go with PITA (Plugging In The Answers) instead!
11% of the PS questions in the 2022 OG Quant book can be solved using PITA, making it the second-most useful test-taking technique.
Out of answer choices B, C, and D, which looks easiest to work with (with rare exception, start with B, C, or D since they typically give more information than A and E)?
I'll go with B.
First run was 30 seconds.
2 x first run was 30 seconds more than the time of the second run, so second run was (2x30)-30 = 60-30 = 30.
If we add those together, do we get 1 minute and 57 seconds? Nope. So B is wrong. Do we need something smaller or larger? Larger.
Let's try D.
First run was 68 seconds.
2 x first run was 30 seconds more than the time of the second run, so second run was (2x68)-30 = 136-30 = 106.
If we add those together, do we get 1 minute and 57 seconds? We get 106+68 seconds, which is more than two minutes. So, that's not right. Do we need something smaller or larger? Smaller.
There's only one answer choice between B and D. Answer choice C. No Algebra.
