paul hamm received thousands (if not millions) of death threats from korea.
the problems were:
1) paul hamm was very smug in his attitude. instead of being grateful that he won the gold even though he really screwed up that jump, he was defiant saying that he deserved it.
2) most observers and people around him urged him early on to perform the ultimate olympic jesture of goodwill and hand the gold medal over to the korean. this would cement the legacy of paul hamm into the olympic storybooks for eternity and we'd be telling our grandparents this story about a hero and ultimate sportsman named paul hamm. instead, he got pissed off and say "why should i? this is my medal"
i'm a korean guy but i can be objective. the objective decision is that the medal was won by paul hamm and it is rightfully his. a scoring error did occur but that's like arguing about a bad call in basketball after the other team already won the championship. stop being a crybaby!
the scoring error is like saying that a shot in basketball in the 1st quarter was ruled a 2 pointer but should have been a 3 pointer upon further examination and since the teams were tied at the end of reguation, that team with the bad call won. there's really no saying that the rest of the game would have played out exactly as it did.
either way, paul hamm was and still is a jackass. that's why wheaties refused to put his face on the cereal box.
