Olympic gymnast Paul Hamm retires, says he now plans to apply to grad school to get an MBA.

https://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/26000674.html

Didn't he win the gold based on incorrect technicality? I remember his gold being tainted.

The spot opens up again :P

oh c'mon kwam, be nice. :) He did do quite well in the last events after that miss. I remember thinking that his chances are completely over.

Even with the scoring dispute, he still would have won silver being 0.051 pts behind the South Korean guy. I wouldn't call that shabby at all! :)

paul hamm received thousands (if not millions) of death threats from korea.

the problems were:

1) paul hamm was very smug in his attitude. instead of being grateful that he won the gold even though he really screwed up that jump, he was defiant saying that he deserved it.

2) most observers and people around him urged him early on to perform the ultimate olympic jesture of goodwill and hand the gold medal over to the korean. this would cement the legacy of paul hamm into the olympic storybooks for eternity and we'd be telling our grandparents this story about a hero and ultimate sportsman named paul hamm. instead, he got pissed off and say "why should i? this is my medal"

i'm a korean guy but i can be objective. the objective decision is that the medal was won by paul hamm and it is rightfully his. a scoring error did occur but that's like arguing about a bad call in basketball after the other team already won the championship. stop being a crybaby!

the scoring error is like saying that a shot in basketball in the 1st quarter was ruled a 2 pointer but should have been a 3 pointer upon further examination and since the teams were tied at the end of reguation, that team with the bad call won. there's really no saying that the rest of the game would have played out exactly as it did.

either way, paul hamm was and still is a jackass. that's why wheaties refused to put his face on the cereal box.

Hard to sound the way I wanted to. What I meant is that he did great! Even with that vault performance he got gold! His other performances were almost perfect, and yes even with the issue of the judges he would still get silver.

Sorry, I'm so troubled with my moving that I think my English got worse (if that's possible, ehehehehe).

This was precisely my problem with Hamm. It would have served him best to just keep his mouth shut. It was a technical error, ala forgetting to put a run up on the scoreboard, not an error in judgment such as calling a borderline strike.

Ultimately, I don't think they should have reversed anything because it was all finished. However, the entire fiasco clearly showed two things:
1) Olympic gymnastics is run by a bunch of buffoons.
2) Paul Hamm has no class.

I agree that with a different attitude he would be even more acclaimed, but still he will be remembered. Dennis Rodman, Charles Barkley, just to name a few, didn't have the proper attitude and they are remembered for what they did. In Brazil we had Romario, who acted as he was heavenly sent, and still he will be remembered for what he did.

The Athens summer games were strange, do you remember the Marathon? A Brazilian runner was leading when the Irish Priest "hugged" him, he finished 3rd place and when the reporters were talking to the winners, the Italian runner who won stayed pissed as people wanted to talk more to the 3rd. Do you think that this Italian guy was generous? I don't, but still he is the gold medalist.

I loved Romario. He was this tiny firecracker who scored goals in bunches and then when the game was in hand, he would pick a fight and get himself a red card. hahahaha I just love those types of characters.
