2. had went home

3. went home

4. had gone home

5. gone home

very interesting Q.

Clearly (1) & (5) are wrong

Difference between went and gone is went is simple past and gone is past participle.

I dont see the need for a PP. Hence I will chose (3) I went home.

Tough choice b/w 3 and 4. I chose 4 though bcos he remebers afetr going to home, so the action has already occured and then he remembers sumthing.

I will go for 3, I dont think 4 is right because the sentence will have 2 had's which I think is not correct.. in past perfect tense we use had to show that an event has occurred in past.. before another event which is again in past.. can anybody verify my understanding please...

I would go with 4. The use of "went" with "did" does not sound correct to me.
