At the opening night performance of a new play,5% of the theatre patrons are late and are seated immediatly,but 30% of the patrons who are late are not seated until the end of the first act.Approx. what percent of the theatre patrons are late?

This question doesnt make sense at all. Probably a typo. Is there an official explanation for this question ? If all the 5% who are are late are seated immediately then how can 30% of the late guys are not seated until the end of the first act ?

The only possible way I can think of is

5% of total came late and were seated immediately - General statement of all late comers
30% of the above late comers came were seated after the first act, so to satisfy the above condition which is a general rule that they need to be seated immediately, we can conclude that this group came after the first act and hence satisfies both the conditions of "seated immediately and also were seated after the first act"

so answer is 5%

Say total patrons who are late =100

so 30 are not seated.
ie, 70 late comers are seated

these 70 are 5% of total number of patrons.

so total number of patrons = 70/5% = 1400

Therefore, %age of patrons who are late = 100/1400 = 7.14%

I didn't exactly get what you are trying to say.

"late AND seated" means both A and B.

Say 2 sets, A(late), B(seated)
5% is the intersection of A and B. 
30% is A NOT B.

Yup B, 30% are not seated , 5% are = 70% of late patrons are seated. 
Considering the 2, 5 + slightly less than half of 5 = around 7 matches option B.
