Hi,
I am applying to a program in rank 50+ as my safe choice. I am wondering whether I should write about the reasons why I choose this school in the optional essay.
One of 2 required essays asks me about the career goal and why MBA question. I did include some reasons why I choose the program at this school, but not much since the maximum number of word is only 250. My friend, who is an alumni from this school, recommends that I use the optional essay to explain more about the reason I choose this school, but I prefer to use the essay to explain about my low GPA in university (although after university, I already took and passed 2 levels of CFA Program to compensate to the low GPA).
The question of the optional essay is just the same as others: Do you want to give additional info to enhance or clarify info you gave in the application, or provide any info that you consider important to the adcom.
So I hope you can give me advice on this issue.
Also, the school asks me to name some schools I also apply. I read somewhere that I should name some comparable schools (not ranked higher) to this school as this shows that I did not consider the school a backed up plan. But in fact, all others school I apply to are ranked higher than this school. So should I lie in this question? What if the school ask about this in the interview and I will be discovered to be dishonest?

Your entire application should be a cohesive story where different aspects provide concrete, new information about your experiences and who you are as a person. If you have a chance to discuss why you want to join a particular MBA program through another essay, I would suggest you avoid repeating yourself in the optional essay. If you also have a low GPA or another extenuating circumstance that is worth mentioning, it might be better to discuss that instead.
