A. The sentence following although has to be a dependent clause. Moreover gaining is progressive continous tense, but the original sentence is in simple past tense.
B. This choice repeats all the error of choice A. Moreover gaining in popularity is idiomatically incorrect as well.
C. It had gained popularity is past perfect which is incorrect in the context. The sentence already clearly mentions that it gained popularity after revisions. The past perfect suggests it gained popularity before the revisions. Illogical.
D. Correct
E. Pronoun error. They cannot refer to the opera.
D is correct

I settled on D as the right answer.

Incorrect because although gaining popularity after numerous revisions is awkward and unclear. I will look for a better choice.

The use of the semi-colon is wrong as although gaining in popularity after numerous revisions is not a main clause; in fact it is not even a clause to begin with. Eliminate B.

The use of the past perfect tense had gained is unacceptable for an action that took place later out of two events. Clearly from the meaning of the sentence, The opera Battered Bride only became popular after numerous revisions to the version of the opera that was not immediately successful. Eliminate C.

This is correct. The use of the past tense did gain is dependent clause is correct. The complete subordinate clause clearly express the intended contrast better than awkward phrase introduced in option A. D is superior to A. Keep D and eliminate A.

IMO D

A) successful, although gaining popularity after numerous revisions
gaining is used as a modifier which does not modify the The Bartered Bride here. Hence it is incorrect


B) successful; although gaining in popularity after numerous revisions
Use of ; to split two Independent clauses. Here phrase is followed by the ; Hence incorrect


C) successful, although it had gained popularity after numerous revisions
Had is used only when there are two events in the past. So tense error. Hence incorrect

D) successful, although it did gain popularity after numerous revisions
Correct answer


E) successful, although they gained popularity after numerous revisions
Use of they raises the SV agreement error. Hence incorrect

Question clearly calls for the contrast using word "although". As a matter of fact both the elements thus contrasted must be logically and grammatically parallel.

'Although' is a subordinating conjunction and needs to connect a dependent clause to the independent clause.
"gaining popularity after numerous revisions" is not a clause. It has no subject and verb.

In option (D), "it did gain popularity after numerous revisions" has a subject and a verb.
