Stupid question perhaps but probably a good one with so many people relocating to the area for school (NYU or CBS, etc). For those attending CBS... what are solid suggestions for reasonable rent (1-1.5K/month single or with roomie) which offer short commute during semester to campus but also wouldn't be horrible commute during summer internship? Assuming one is commuting to MBB offices or down to wall street? Easy to say Bronx for affordability and commute but taking into account internship... that becomes bothersome and lengthy.

My recommendation is to stay closer to the West Side in Manhattan. Not all the neighborhoods are so posh that they are unaffordable by students. You especially want to look at something that is on the #1, 2, or 3 subway lines. The #1 stops in Morningside Heights, home of Columbia, and its an easy switch from the 2 or the 3. Trying to get cross town can sometimes be a pain.
When I worked on Wall St. (or should I say Broad St.) and also mid-town, I took that route (the IRT - Seventh Avenue Line) all the time.
Congratulations! I've got some good friends who are going to be your classmates -- have fun with it!

Most people live in the UWS or Morningside Heights, ie pretty much between 70th and 120. The OCH is mostly between 110 and 120, so there are quite a few people living in that area, and the rest are living in self-arranged places further south.
I'd say about 60-70% of the class lives in that area. The rest live throughout Manhattan (mostly people who lived here before) and a few brave souls in outer boroughs (or worse). If you live by the 2/3 express stops at 72 and 96 you can jet downtown pretty quickly. I live near 96 and its a pretty good location for getting around -- you can get onto the 1 for quick access to campus and on the 2/3 to jet pretty much anywhere downtown.
LMK if you want to chat further about locations. If you're looking for roomies, whenever they get the Class of 2014 Facebook group going I'd use that as a resource to help meet people. I know quite a few people who found their roomies that way. GL and welcome to CBS!!!
