With the Fuqua deadline just around the corner we would like to help Applicants by giving some tips on answering the 25 random things essay.
Having read hundreds of essays since this question was introduced many years ago (2012?) I can tell you that many applications actually right random things in this essay. The fact is, this is still a business school essay and the adcom is going to draw an impression about you after reading it. So have a strategy in creating your pointers. Here are the things I keep in mind when I help applicants draw their list of 25 Random Things:
1. Include pointers from different phases of your life- your growing years, college, work-life. 2. Include pointers about your family, friends and community. 3. Include pointers about people/ideas who have influenced/motivated you and shaped you in some way. 4. Talk about values 5. Mention some outstanding achievements. Avoid professional achievements. 6. Give examples of your interests, hobbies or volunteering activities 7. You can mention interesting anecdotes that tell something about you. 8. International travels, interesting anecdotes related to that, intercultural experiences. 9. Show your adventurous side. 10. Talk about the time you took initiative for something meaningful. 11. Were you an academic star and have something special to share? 12. Did you overcome adverse situations? 13. Last but not the least, include a few random things
Through these pointers, try to demonstrate key traits valued by business schools: leadership ability, collaboration and team spirit, helpfulness, empathy, ethics, values, and ofcourse, the fun side of you.
To make the process still easier for you, we are providing some samples – DO NOT COPY THEM. These are snippets from other people’s lives!!
1. When I joined COMPANY, my team wanted to take me out for dinner. Instead, I suggested we go to an Escape Room. My team loved the experience so much that became a ritual to take new employees to Escape Rooms.
2. Three years spent with my family in ME Country: a country known for lack of civil rights, ironically made me more open-minded and flexible as I learned to adapt to a completely different culture, language and lifestyle.
3. I have counseled at least six families to not pull their female children out of school, to be married. One of the girls I managed to keep in school achieved the state merit list and is preparing to write a medical school entrance exam.
4. I am fantastic at remembering and navigating routes. However, once after losing the jungle trail, my friend and I spent a night deep inside a wildlife sanctuary without any camping gear- just with a flicker of campfire and courage.
5. I am the EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) coordinator in my company. Some of my initiatives include improving the gas exhaust system and storage system of hazardous chemicals. I proudly admit that I have kept our premise accident free for the last 3-years.
6. I love puns; in fact, when it comes to puns, I’m a PUNdit! Here’s a pun I invented- An alpha lion lost its canines and its ‘pride’!
