This is a ambiguous question

The answer can be either B or D

In B that is would refer to market

in D that are would refer to reality shows

I think the sentence makes sense with either "is" or "are"

There was a similar OG question I believe, in which the choice was B

From what I have read, the verb has to match the closest noun, so, tv shows that are bringing should be right, thus making it unambiguous.

So did I. I thought that correct answer must be either B or E. I've been told that "THAT" always must refer to closest noun, which in this case is "SHOWS". Surprisingly, but correct answer is D!

I took this from KAPLAN GMAT 800. Here is the explanation:

Get rid of all the stuff that separates subjects and verbs in this sentence and see what you are left with: Out of the...interest...has grown a ... market ...that is bringing. If you dont get distracted by the mofifiers and extra phrases, you will see that both subjects in the sentence (interest and market) are singular. Eliminate (A) and (B) for including obviously plural verbs, and (E) as well since that bring is plural. (C) distors the meaning of original sentence by describing only one television show, and you are left with (D)

Hmm.

AimHigher, could you please point us to the OG question you were referring to? I would like to see the OE for that and if that sentence was in any way different from this.

I don't think we have a clear subject here but rather a modifier phrase 'Out of the public’s interest in the details of and conflicts in other people’s lives'

and modifier phrases, I once read, are singulars..

So, B.

This is where I get confused, when should you use "another" vs. "the other"?

I understand that "the other" refers to a specific other

and

"another" refers to any other thing; however I just can't make the connection, any advice please?

OG 11, SC 116

Thanks, I looked this up. The OG however, is not ambiguous at all, in that there is no option with "are bringing" where everything else in the sentence is right.

However, the OG does go for "is bringing" because the market is bringing and not the "tv shows'" equivalent in the sentence.
