Hey everyone,
When preparing for Reading Comprehension on the GMAT, a common piece of advice is to build stamina and familiarity with dense academic writing by reading high-caliber periodicals.
Publications like
The Economist,
Scientific American, and
Smithsonian Magazine frequently mirror the tone, sentence density, and subject matter (business analysis, hard sciences, and humanities/history) tested on the exam.
For those of you who integrated long-form outside reading into your prep, how did you approach it?
- Did you maintain active subscriptions? Did you pick one publication to read daily/weekly, or did you rotate across multiple sources to avoid subject bias?
- Active vs. Passive Reading: Did you treat them as casual morning reads, or did you actively map passages—pausing after paragraphs to identify the primary purpose, author's stance, and transitional shifts?
- ROI vs. Official Material: Looking back, did reading non-GMAT publications move the needle on your Verbal score, or was your time better spent strictly cycling through official passages and question logs?
Would love to hear how you balanced outside reading with official prep, and whether you felt it directly translated into better pacing and retention on test day.
