Let me know if I misunderstood the question , but the question says P is growing a snake which doubles every three hours.
If there will be 5.12 x 10^6 in 12 hours, how many were there 6 hours ago?

x-2x-4x-8x-16x
so 16x will be in 12 hrs. Hence 16x=5.12*10^6.
x=3.2*10^5
Then 6hrs ago is exactly half so in 6hrs the snake will grow 4x = 4*3.2*10^5.
So , Correct ans should be 1.28*10^6.
But I don't see this in the given answer choices.

From 6 hours ago to 12 hours from now is 18 hours. Since it doubles every 3 hours, it doubles 18/3 = 6 times, meaning it increased 2^6 times.

x * 2^6 = 5.12 * 10^6
x * 2^6 = 512 * 10^4
x = 8*10^4

Answer: D.
