For 2 years, I worked under Head-Operations (General Manager) of company as operational Analyst. In this profile, my work catered to the data analysis on various aspects for the plant improvement. I have been involved in high decision making body for the turn-around of the company. For this I worked with Managing Director of the company. That was not easy at the beginning but it has been a great life lesson. I found myself becoming more independent and more outspoken person. Taking decision to go abroad opened my mind and opportunities. I met people that don’t necessarily think and live like i did. This has called me into question what I’ve believed in so far and gave me opportunity to grow from this experience. Working and Hanging out with localities of Thailand gave me chance to live in this amazing culture and experience more closely.

Well my good sir,
you definitely have some amzing stuff going for you, most importantly your international experience, and you leading a team of 50! Which is actually quite a lot for an MBA applicant. AND becoming "the youngest person in the company to have been hired at the post of Manager in the company’s history of 30+ years. "

Love it. :)

Yes, I think overall with this background you have a shot at INSEAD. Will you have a BETTER shot with a better GMAT? For sure! should you retake it? Well, that's up to you, but basically my advice is that IF you believe you can do better you really should, especially since INSEAD has intakes every six months. It wouldn't even be a serious delay.

For some reference about Indian candidates and the GMAT, I'll paste you links to two very relevant articles for you here:

Hi All,

I recently gave GMAT after 1 and a half month of prep and scored 700(Q49, V35). This was my first attempt, and I relied mostly on OG only (No test series, etc). Now, there are two things I need help with: Overall Profile Evaluation and If I should try for a higher score.

This would be a brief of my profile:
10th: 89 CBSE
12th: 81 CBSE
Graduation: 2014 graduate in IT stream from one of the NITs with 6.97 CPI (Pointers are on the lower side)

Work-ex: 3+
1 year as Business Analyst with one of the Indian E-Com Major.
2 years with one of the Hospitality startup, was part of the team which built an entire state's business from scratch. I was promoted twice, started as a City Head and went on to become Business Development Head for the state. Worked on both the fronts: Business Development and Sales.
Currently ( from last 6 months): Part of expansion team of a startup in Fintech domain, its still in stealth mode and we're setting up the ground work.

EC:- Badminton Player: Represented my school at zonal Level and college at national Level (University Tournaments) as captain
Marathon Runner: Had picked up this hobby recently only, over the years of Job Life, I transformed from physical fit to obese. So, I researched and planned my own fitness plan(was able to shred 1/5th of body fat). Marathons were small milestones of the plan, and I've already successfully done 2 half marathons and a full marathon. Currently I'm mentoring 3 more people on Nutrition and Exercise for weight loss and overall fitness.
Maths Teacher: taught Maths at an NGO for underprivileged kids for 3 months.
Head Coordinator, Sports Committee(College): I was part of the initial team who had set up this committee, and in the final year as a Head Coordinator we organised college's sports fest as well in which 1K+ students participated.

I'd really appreciate any sort of advice/help

Thanks!

Hey there!
Well my first question to you about INSEAD would by: why? why do you think you fit? Why do you want to go? How does this link with your specific goals?

Your GMAT is essentially fine (although higher is always better) but a bigger problem you are liable to have is that your profile currently (from what I can see) seems very "Standard". Indian IT guy, some teaching and some marathon... and I'm not sure this fits in really with INSEAD's desire for older mature, experienced and international leaders. INSEAD also has a tendency to like applicants with a broad range of interests and hobbies and activities, and so for I don't see so much of that.

Finally, the average age going in INSEAD is 29/30 usually, so you are quite inexperienced...

Now don't take this to mean that I want to discourage you from applying, but you should really think about how to fit and when to apply, and WHY specifically INSEAD (beyond the fact that it is a very well-ranked school)...

I hope this helps!

Hi everyone,

I am currently brainstorming for my INSEAD essays.
I would appreciate an evaluation of my profile, especially which points I should focus in the essays.

Nationality: Filipino
Age: 26
Gender: Female
GMAT: 760 (Q51,V41,IR7,AWA6)

Academic Background:
Undergraduate degree in Science/Engineering in one of the 3 best universities in the Philippines.
Finished with a GPA of 3.53 (with Honors graduate).

Work Experience: 6 years by matriculation
After graduation, I immediately got employed to one of the biggest manufacturing companies in Japan.
I had varied work experiences as Sales Engineer, Business Specialist, Strategic Planner, and now International Sales Expert.
My job involves overseas sales and business development so I usually go on overseas business trips - the longest assignment I had was a business training for 6-months in Mexico.

International Experience:
5 years of work in Japan
6 months of business training in Mexico
Daily correspondence with customers of various nationalities
Immense love for traveling - I have checked more than 40 countries off my world travel list.
I speak 5 languages (4 of them fluently)

I teach English and Spanish on my free time.
I am an events volunteer/translator in my city's international association ( the biggest event I volunteered for was the International day in which almost 5,000 people attended the cultural event).
Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver

Post-MBA goals:
Short term, I plan to work in the consulting industry (focus on International business).
Long term, I hope to enter International Organizations such as the World Bank and UNDP with the goal of leading projects related to infrastructure development in developing countries.

Well, I think you are a fantastic fit for INSEAD!
- Female
- Tons of international experience
- You work internationally with international responsibilities
- You work in manufacturing
- You seem to have made excellent progress at work

And oh yeah....... 760!!! :)
Fantastic.

In addition to that, in your essays, just be expansive, and thoughtful. Of course as always focus on leadership leadership leadership, as well as the diversity of your international experience (focusing on... you guessed it! leadership!!)

That should be good for starters. If you want more specifics about what to write for which essay, feel free to drop us a line here: https://bit.ly/mbafcGC

And have a look at our analysis for INSEAD's essay. This should be helpful: https://admissionado.com/resources/essays/insead/

Hi shubham12123,

You indeed have a distinguished profile and had you been in the 700 club you would've had a very competitive profile. I am not discouraging you to apply but it will be tough for you. The competition at INSEAD is fierce and every aspect of your profile matters. You have good undergrad college on your resume, nice work ex, upward career trajectory, international experience, etc. I hope you can display some ECA and community involvement too maybe as a part of CSR initiative of Polyplex. Prepare a very sound application and hope for the best. Let me know if you need help.

You are completely right, the work experience and your lack of international exposure is the issue here, everything else looks on par for INSEAD. So if I were you I would definitely try to find ways to make up for that, or wait with applying if that is at all an option.

Are you considering any other schools besides INSEAD? I am asking as your chances might be better at schools that do not consider international experiences as important as INSEAD does.

Feel free to reach out to ARINGO if you’d like to brain storm on school selection a bit further: https://aringo.com/mba-process-registration/

And good luck!

Interesting and competitive profile for INSEAD in my opinion, and I do see INSEAD as a good choice of school given your post MBA goal. Assuming your essays and recommendations are not problematic somehow (and if you think they might be, feel free to be in touch and the ARINGO team can explain how we can help with that! https://aringo.com/mba-process-registration/) I would be really surprised if you do not hear from them.

Very impressive for the most part, the only downside I can see is the lack of international experience as INSEAD is a school that puts a lot of weight on that, so you would have to overcome quite a big hurdle in order to be admitted despite that. I think it may be possible, but I can’t be completely sure, so to be honest yours is one of those profiles that could go either way.

So while you may have a shot at INSEAD I hope you are applying to other schools as well, preferably ones where international experience carries less weight?

Hi,

Please help me evaluate my profile for Insead

Age 34
GMAT 710
IR - 7

10th 71.4%
12th 74.8%
Undergrad 71% from a decent college in Karnataka

GRE -1440/1600
Masters in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Chicago with GPA of 3.64/4.0

Work Experience
Post my masters worked as an Application Engineer for an investment research company for 1 year. As I wanted to work for a startup joined a cloud networking startup( Arista Networks ) in Bay area founded by Co-founder and initial investor in Google. Worked with the same startup in Bay area for 2.5 years. In 2011 I returned to India and was instrumental in setting up, recruiting and training people for Bangalore office. During my employment at Arista I was the lead developer for 71xx series of switches, helping and enabling other colleagues to understand the nuances of the chip and also making sure all the support cases related to 71xx are resolved in a timely manner.

Entrepreneurship
In July 2015, Arista went public which gave me the financial freedom to start my own venture, Funrento - An online toy & book library for kids in the age of 2-8 years. I along with my wife started Funrento, realizing the importance of toys in the development of the child. However, toys in the market are very expensive and little ones do not with these expensive toys for very long. Due to some logistics challenges and difficulty in scaling, we decided to close the online toy library in Jan 2017.

Investment
During the last 2 years, I developed a lot of interest towards public and private investment. I exposed and learned a lot about different kinds of investment vehicles in India such as equity, mutual fund, debt and real estate. Investing in equity exposed me to a lot of financial ratios and parameters which were very helpful when evaluating a public company.

Also, I became an angel investor in 2 early stage startups, advising them on the strategy and helping them raise more funds from family and friends

Travelling
I also have a passion for traveling and have been doing a lot of Domestic as well as International travel over the past 2 years. I have traveled to South Africa, Greece, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia

Volunteer Work

In 2017 I started working on a website with the aim of helping parents select schools based on reviews and facilities. This is still work in progress

I am also an active volunteer for Art of Living, humanitarian and educational non-governmental organizations, founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji. I have recently organized a happiness course for 50 participants in our residential complex.

You have a very rich and very background, a lot of really interesting things that are going to read well in the application if you execute that properly. I really enjoyed just reading your entry here. And so I think that would be foreshadowing of a good application. Your statistics are borderline, but I think that would be offset by some of the experiences you have that you could share with others in the classroom and truly add value to their experience in business school. You're getting a little bit on the old side so I would definitely expedite on this. And I think it's important that you develop a strong cohesive narrative, make sure that you work with someone who has a deep expertise in candidate positioning. I think getting your story straight and making sure that all the diverse Parts come together is key, and that this will all be wrapped in a nice little bow once you get an MBA.... and you'll have a clear focus on the next step. I think that's really important. I'm optimistic I strongly encourage you to apply. If we were to look at the criteria for INSEAD, you have the academic aptitude, your GMAT is borderline for Indians but I like that you have a masters with a good GPA. From a good school. You have some great leadership experience and I think you would be excellent in terms of making a contribution. I guess the one thing that I might be a little curious about is how you're going to be leveraging INSEAD, I realize that you've done some traveling but where is the International orientation, how does that come into the picture for you career wise? It's important for them to know that you want to leverage that aspect of the program. So that's something that needs to be developed or maybe you just haven't expressed it here.

Dear nice-folk of gmatclub, Here are my stats, would really appreciate an evaluation:

Age: 26
Nationality: Indian
GMAT: 750 (Q50, V42)
Undergrad: Non-IIT, Top 25 engineering school
Undergraduate GPA: 3.6
Current work ex: 48 months - Consulting (19 months), Pharma (29 months)

I worked in a leading multinational pharma consulting firm as an associate for 19 months. International work ex was limited to working with American clients and colleagues - no travel. President of the toastmasters club and launched training programs for new hires. Not much to write about work, I'd left before getting promoted. Received an award for gamifying the toastmasters program
I then moved to one of the largest multinational pharmacos in a commercial excellence role (SFE). Managed multiple projects across functions: sales force rationalization, strategy roadmaps, capability building roadmaps, gamification, restructuring businesses, implementing innovative business models, go to market implementation - many of these have had business impact in $MM or equivalent. Have been awarded 3 times in the last 2 years for 3 different projects. Youngest member of team, colleagues are MBAs and received a fast track promotion in 2y against firm average of 3y.

Extra Curriculars:
President of Toastmasters club
Watch a lot of movies (>300 last year alone)
Travelling - have traveled to ~10 countries, and to multiple altitude regions of the Himalayas in the last 3 years
One helluva storyteller :)

Short term goal: Top tier consulting firm

Very impressive for the most part, the only downside I can see is the lack of international experience as INSEAD is a school that puts a lot of weight on that, so you would have to overcome quite a big hurdle in order to be admitted despite that. I think it may be possible, but I can’t be completely sure, so to be honest yours is one of those profiles that could go either way.

So while you may have a shot at INSEAD I hope you are applying to other schools as well, preferably ones where international experience carries less weight?

JL

Thanks for sharing JL! Yes, I will be applying to other schools.

The international work experience bit is a huge hurdle - I was wondering if I could spin the traveling as somewhat of an equivalent.

Dear Experts,

Kindly go through my profile and let me know what you all think of it. Any suggestions or tips for improving the profile will be much appreciated!

Nationality : Indian
Age : 26
Male
GMAT : 660(Q40,V41)

Education : BE(Hons.) in Electronics and Instrumentation from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Dubai Campus
GPA: 3.4
During undergrad, I interned at two multinational firms in Dubai and worked on a project on improving in-flight damage analysis of air-crafts with an R&D institute in Germany.

Work Experience: 5+ years
After graduating in 2012, I have been working in the offshore oil and gas drilling industry. I joined a multinational offshore drilling company as a trainee Electronic Technician and currently I am the youngest Electronic Tech. in my company. My jobs include maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting various equipment on-board the offshore vessels. The job demands rigorous planning and accurate analysis of the problems in order to solve them within the shortest period of time to cut down losses by avoiding downtime.
Apart from the technical jobs, my responsibilities include updating inventory of the equipment and spares, managing a team of 4, ordering equipment and spares, calculating yearly budgets, cutting down operational costs, communicating with the client and understanding there requirements, enhancing the safety standards of the rig and making sure that my team stays stress free and motivated. In the last five years I have won safety awards and man of the month award for up-keeping the safety standards of the rigs and implementing innovative techniques to improve ease and safety of operations.
My work has taken me to various offshore drilling vessels in Iran and India.

Apart from work I love to travel. I have traveled to countries in Europe, South East Asia and Middle East. I have been trained in Indian classical music (vocal and instrumental) and have won awards in singing, speaking and acting competitions in school and undergrad. I have been a part of the basketball and boxing teams during my undergrad and was also the feather-weight boxing champion.

In 2012 I opened an NGO, which focuses on teaching music to the underprivileged citizens. I have also been a part of a project concerned with studying the effects of classical music on prisoners with life sentences.

Currently, apart from my offshore job, I am involved in a start-up in the food industry. This is my second start-up after a failed one.

Well I cannot think of anything more to tell about myself.
Please help me understand how can I improve my profile and experience in order to make it to INSEAD.

Thank you

Hi,
Can someone evaluate my profile?

Age 26, Indian male
GMAT 730, (Q-50, V-40, IR -7)
Completed undergraduation from a top non-IIT engineering institute (CGPA 7.9/10), completed MBA in finance from a top 5 B-School in India
CFA Level 3 candidate (plan to give L3 in June 2018), cleared FRM Part I in Nov 2014

Currently working in a private bank in debt syndication (would complete more than 1.5 years in the bank by September '18)
Previously worked in an FMCG (worked there for around 1.5 years)

Thanks in advance!! :)

PS: I am quite sure my work-ex and lack of international experience would play spoilsport but would still like to hear from experts..

Hi there--- yes the lack of international experience is a challenge for INSEAD admission; when you say 'my work-ex' do you just mean 3 years doesn't feel like enough, or do you mean the quality of your experience doesn't feel up to par? Some of it really depends upon what you did on the job... examples of taking initiative, stepping up and showing leadership, leading results etc all make a difference. Your GMAT and grades are solid so you won't have to worry about that side of things and the CFA is a small plus. Of course being an Indian male does also mean you're in a competitive applicant group, but you have done other things besides engineering so that's a start.... for more detail of course feel free to sign up for a free 30 minute consultation at any point, www.mbamission.com/consult, so we can share more feedback on your CV. Good luck!

Hello,

So it looks like you have a lot of strengths to your profile.... international experience, NGO experience, progression and accomplishment at work, HBx, Brazilian nationality, solid GMAT... and one glaring weakness, being your GPA. It would of course be easier to say things look great without that, and it IS so competitive.... but fingers crossed that INSEAD will consider you and potentially invite you to the interview, if you do a great job with essays, and if your recommendations are fabulous. ;) Then it would be up to you to win over both interviewers of course. Good luck to you!
