Over the last decade, digital publishing has seen immense growth; last year saw a record number of titles released digitally. Will this year bring a new record? Well, these digital titles are either released by publishing houses commissioning new titles for digital release and converting their physical titles into an electronic format or by independent authors self-publishing their books. Thus far, new titles have been released by publishing houses at well below last year’s record rate. Further, it appears that the number of independent authors planning to release a book this year will be no higher than the number last year, and there is no evidence that suggests that these authors will release more books per author than did last year’s authors. So, it is unlikely that the number of titles released this year will match last year’s record.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is a claim challenged by the argument; the second is an explicit assumption that the challenge is based on.
(B) The first is a claim challenged by the argument; the second is a judgment advanced in support of the argument’s main conclusion.
(C) The first provides evidence in support of the argument’s main conclusion; the second is an objection that has been raised against that main conclusion.
(D) The first and the second are each claims that have been advanced in support of a position opposed by the argument.
(E) The first provides evidence in support of the argument’s main conclusion; the second is a judgment advanced in support of that main conclusion.

The first line mentions, digital publishing has seen an immense growth over the last 10 years. Then, the subsequent statement mentions last year record digital titles released. The author put forth a new question : will this year sales bring a new record ??. Subsequent statement mentions what a digital title is, and how it’s being issued.

BF1: puts up a factual statement- till now the record rate is low compared to last year record rate. The next line begins with a keyword Further, which means the subsequent statement is in sync with the idea put forth in the earlier statement. Then we have the BF2, mentions the average Tor books released per author is not greater compared to the previous year.

So, as of now both BF1 and BF2 both boils down to the same direction, to address the question : Will this year sales bring a new record ??

The last line is the conclusion, that the outcome is unlikely.

Both, BF statements are not in contradiction and they support the conclusion which has been arrived.

(A) The first is a claim challenged by the argument; the second is an explicit assumption that the challenge is based on.

BF1 is not a claim, but a factual statement , and BF2 is not an assumption, but an evidence. Hence, wrong.

(B) The first is a claim challenged by the argument; the second is a judgment advanced in support of the argument’s main conclusion.
The BF1 is not a claim, but a factual evidence, and more over its not challenged but supported. BF2 is in support of the main conclusion. But, a judgement directed to support main conclusion . Hence, wrong.

(C) The first provides evidence in support of the argument’s main conclusion; the second is an objection that has been raised against that main conclusion.

BF1 provides support to main conclusion. BF2, is in direction with the main conclusion, actually supporting it. Hence, wrong.

(D) The first and the second are each claims that have been advanced in support of a position opposed by the argument.

BF1 and BF2 support the main conclusion, but are not claims rather they are factual statements and evidences. Hence, wrong.

(E) The first provides evidence in support of the argument’s main conclusion; the second is a judgment advanced in support of that main conclusion.

BF1 and BF2 are both supporting main conclusion. BF2 is supporting the view of BF1 towards the main conclusion.
Hence, answer.

Option E

Using POE, this question becomes very easy.

(A) The first is a claim challenged by the argument; the second is an explicit assumption that the challenge is based on.- Incorrect: No way the the first boldface is a claim challenged by the argument.
(B) The first is a claim challenged by the argument; the second is a judgment advanced in support of the argument’s main conclusion.-Incorrect: No way the the first boldface is a claim challenged by the argument.
(C) The first provides evidence in support of the argument’s main conclusion; the second is an objection that has been raised against that main conclusion.-Incorrect: The second boldface doesn't provide any objection to the main conclusion instead it supports the main conclusion.
(D) The first and the second are each claims that have been advanced in support of a position opposed by the argument.- Incorrect- Do both oppose our main conclusion?- Absolutely No.
(E) The first provides evidence in support of the argument’s main conclusion; the second is a judgment advanced in support of that main conclusion.- Correct. Both takes us to the same conclusion

Conclusion it is unlikely that the number of titles released this year will match last year’s record.
BF1 and BF2 both are supporting the conclusion

(A) & (B) "Challenged by the argument": Incorrect. because both BF support the argument
(C) BF2 is incorrect because it supports the argument but it says opposite
(D) both BF1and BF2 is incorrect because both are supporting but option says the opposite .
(E) Correct. Both support the main conclusion hence E is correct

Option E is correct
