Part-time experience on MBA resume?

Question

Hi,

With only a bit more than a year of full-time work experience at this point, I would like to highlight the part-time work I've done during college on my resume for my MBA application. Some of this work is relevant to my post-MBA goals, while other parts (e.g., being an instructor / teaching assistant at my uni) might not be. Do you have any guidelines for which roles to include? And how many? I've had 4 part-time positions while in college.

It's hard to say for sure without knowing the specifics of your work experience as well as your post-MBA goals. That said, many applications actually want to see all of your work experience regardless of it's fit with your goals & relevance to your goals so be sure to read each school's instructions carefully. And if you want to include some more derail here we can provide some more guidance!

It is clear that you should include that part-time work that you have done that is relevant to your MBA field and your post-graduate plans. However, it may be almost as important to include any work experience that may, on the face of it, seem less relevant. Admission offices are looking for a number of traits and characteristics, and not purely your passion for your studies and field. Team-work skills, leadership skills, the ability to persevere and work hard are all traits that admission officers are scanning CVs for. Whilst adding your part-time work on your CV, be sure to include any practical skills that you gained. These may also come in handy during the interview process. Behavioural interviewing is a popular type of interview which you may come across in your university admission interview, or in an interview later in life. This type of interview is constructed with questions that start “Tell me about a time…” or “Give me an example of when…”. Rather than telling the interviewer your capabilities and skill-set, they are looking for real-life experiences where you demonstrated these skills. Including your prior experience, no matter how irrelevant from the field you wish to study, will shine light on these skills and will help you when answering these questions.
