Paul, a painter, paints only flowers or cats in his notebook. The pictures are drawn in either regular pencil or in charcoal (but not in both.) The total number of pictures in Paul's notebook is 39 greater than the number of pictures painted in pencil. How many flower pictures drawn in charcoal are there in the notebook?
(1) There are 7 flower pictures drawn in pencil in the notebook.
(2) There are 11 cat pictures drawn in charcoal in the notebook.

Note the 39 in the question means there are 39 charcoal paintings. Thus statement 2 is sufficient as there must be 39 - 11 flower charcoal paintings.

If the total number of paintings is 39 more than the number of pencil paintings, then those 39 extra paintings must be charcoal, because every painting is either pencil or charcoal. So we know from the stem that we have 39 charcoal paintings, and from Statement 2 we know 11 of those are cats, so the rest, or 28 of them, must be flowers, and Statement 2 is sufficient. Statement 1 is not, so the answer is B.
