Hi all,
I am preparing for GMAT and plan to take it in early October of this year, 2016, to avail of the deadlines for the major schools for the fall session of 2017. As I am shooting for the top institutes my concern is with the section on integrated reasoning.
While going over through the scoring scale and test taking strategies, what I have found is, getting a score of 5 can get you into the 67th percentile which poises you above the average. However a score of 8 gets you to 90+ percentile. My question is are these scores reflecting the number of questions the candidate gets fully correct or are based on some scale similar to the verbal or the quantitative sections. Further on if a candidate is unable to reach the end of the section, is there a penalty associated like the ones that are applicable in case of the verbal or the quantitative sections?

The number of questions you answer correctly is your raw score, which is then converted into a scale of 8.
And yes, there is a punishment for not completing all the questions in the IR section.
However, generally speaking, you want to score decent enough on the IR section so as not to draw negative attention to a low IR score.
You don't want the admissions committee to focus on a really low IR score of like 1 or 2 -- that shows lack of effort or ability
That said, it's not that much more beneficial to have a perfect 8 versus a 6 or 7.
So ideally, you want to stay in the 4, 5, 6, or 7 range to efficiently get a score that is decent without putting a crazy amount of effort.

Many Business Schools have publicly stated that they do not use an applicant's IR score when evaluating an application, so you likely have nothing to be concerned about. However, if you're interested in what a specific School/Program thinks about the IR score, then you should research that School directly (you might also consider contacting the School to ask).

2) What is your goal score?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
