Hey gmat society,
I want to know whether there is official penalty points for unanswered questions.
I had gmat yesterday and had the feeling I was doing extremely well during quant, but couldn't finish last question, finally I got 49 in quant, is it possible I could have got 50 or even 51 if I answered randomly?

Hi,

Unfortunately, the GMAT does penalise unanswered questions quite heavily. Exactly how much it impacts your score is hidden behind the shroud of GMAC's proprietary algorithm but its a well known fact that you are better off taking a guess than leaving a question.

Having said this, I would also like to state that no one can tell for sure whether you could have got a 50 or 51 if you had answered that question because there are multiple factors that determine your final score.

Don't forget to hit the kudos button if you thought my answer was helpful!

Get the ESR. If it shows that you got almost every question right before the last one, maybe leaving the last one is what pulled your score down. Otherwise, it's almost impossible to say. If you plan to take the exam again, manage your time better. It's absolutely critical at the higher score ranges. And if you do find yourself in the same position (don't), you might want to mark something randomly instead of leaving the question unanswered.

GMAC does mention how they penalize - the system is somewhat complex (to my mind ateast) but on average it translates into 3 percentile points per unanswered question. This is not raw score points but percentiles.
