Key idea #1: The first two clauses are modifiers. Hence, the third clause (which is what is underlined) must begin with the subject of the sentence.

Since (A) and (B) violate this principle (stated above), eliminate (A) and (B)

Key idea #2: In the second clause, we have a comparison being made - a comparison of the diets of two different animals.

(C) and (E) compares the diet with the animal itself, a comparison that is illogical. Hence, eliminate (C) and (E).

Only (D) makes the right comparison, while satisfying both the key ideas (stated above). Hence, (D) is the right answer.
