personal query--anybody pls advise

Hi All, Was wondering whether to take my wife along with me

or not

? i will be applying in 2007 for fall2008 start, mostly to top10US schools guys who have already completed the mba...what do you think? since i am an international applicant my wife would accompany me with the dependant visa and she will not be eligible to work. so this would definitely be expensive. but how expensive is it compared to the overall cost? is there anyone who has done this before(done mba by taking his wife along)? pls let me know i would be encouraged to do so.... what factors would effect my decision? regards,

Cost would to some extend depend on where your MBA school is located
Most schools provide projections for living expesnes for say alone/married/married with kids etc etc. 

Well I look at your position this way If you are an int candidate willing to spend say 125000 USD if you go alone then taking your wife along would be say (taking a wild guess) 30000 USD extra. 

Now say, u take a loan to pay of 125000 USD then spend x years to repay
where x would be 3 to 4 (assuming you take 100% loan and are willing to work in US)

Now with a wife with you its likely to be around x+ 1 or 2 years to pay off 

So ask urself are you willing to scarifice 2 years of now (the best part of your life with your wife) to 1 or max 2 more years of loan pay back?? and then decide

I would ask yourself this: Where will she be happier? What does she want? 

For instance, if she can't work, and has no friends in the US, and you are getting an MBA, is she supposed to just sit around the house till 10 or 11 at night waiting for you to come home? 

Think of it not as "bring" but as "coming with". 

As to cost, it just depends whether she's willing to live in a small studio with you where neither or you have much space.

ya venky as you mentioned i have two decide between the two options....
and as rhyme said i will also have to find a way to keep her engaged in some sort of activity.....

i have to be positive that i would be getting a good post MBA job and that she would find a couple of friends and enjoy.....

but i still want to get the thoughts of an int'l who has actually done it....

Infact You can contact the college dirrectly
Its an excellent way of expressing interest
Wht I mean is these college have a partners club
maybe you can setup a call/email chat with one of the internationals out there

Talk to the school or some alum and find out what kind of stuff they have for partners. My wife is living with me in US since I came to US in 2003. She has a work visa in US but if am admitted to European schools then she will be accompanying me even though she can't work. As rhyme said, she should be willing to live with you under all circumstances (small apartment, late schedules, you drinking more frequently

) because cribbing is not going to help any of you and in a tense environment you will not be able to take full advantage of MBA.

With my fiance it won't be a problem if I start drinking more frequently, it will just make that we drink a more similar amount of alcohol...
