A and B are to D, what X and Y are to Z.

Answer (D) is correct. We do not need past time, so (C) is incorrect.

This is a Subject-verb Agreement + Parallelism Error.

Correct Answer : D

In D, “X are to Y what P are to Q” is parallel. Hence, D is the best choice.

Options C and D follow the correct idiomatic usage.

I will go for option D since present tense is more suitable here. This is because the non-underlined portion also uses present tense for a reference to a time in the past. Same should be followed for the underlined portion as well.

generis GMATNinja can you please help with this question? Why is C correct?

The sentence makes a comparison between what personal coaches and trainers were to 1980's with what fencing masters and dancing teachers were in, say, 1750's. I understand that we consider groups of people from different time periods, but since we are talking about the past, and the non-underlined part of the sentence uses "are", I thought it is reasonable to use "are" again to refer to an even earlier period of time.

Thanks in advance.
