pencil a x
eraser b 2x
pen c 3x

Where a,b, c indicate the dollar amount; x, 2x, 3x indicate the quantity.
What is the value of ax?

a+b = c

The second sentence is saying that if he had paid 3x*b + 2x*c instead of 2x*b + 3x*c he would have saved 20$, so:

3bx + 2cx = 3cx + 2bx - 20 => bx - cx = - 20 => x(c-b) = 20
first equation into the second: x(a+b - b) = 20 ax = 20 (C)
