I am 33 with 8 years+ experience at a PSU bank and was pondering about pursuing PGPX or equivalent for career growth. I am at an entry level management designation. Is it a good idea to pursue MBA at this stage or will my age and experience hinder my placement chances?

Hi Sonalirele,

If you are purely looking from the immediate gain perspective, then no, the MBA at this stage will not help much in terms of monetary benefits that you will get after MBA and the placements will also be not so easy.

But no one does MBA for that purpose. If you look at the long term gains, the MBA gives you these -
1. Even if you start at not so good position, your career growth after MBA will be far better than what you can expect in a PSU bank, which in long term will compensate for monetary benefits.
2. Intellectually you will grow. Learning in PSU bank at this stage may not be so steep as you must have experienced in initial phase of your joining. MBA will help you grow from the perspective of knowledge that you will gain.
3. You would be able to change sectors! You are thinking of doing an MBA because probably you want to get out from the present setup. Any opportunity big or small is worth trying, isn't it?

Hope it helped.

Hey, I am also a PSU Banker with 7+ years of experience. Last year I decided to quit and to go for an MBA. Even I had the same qualms in mind, but when I weighed the pros and cons of an MBA at this stage of my career, I was pretty sure that an MBA at this stage of my career will indeed be an important milestone. Not only I will get a break from my routine job for a year, but also the skills that I will add to my skillset will indeed be valuable for the rest of my career. I started my GMAT preparations last year in December, and now after 1 year, I am happy to inform that I am going to IIM-Ahmedabad for their PGPX (1 year MBA) program.
Since I got the admit, I have already added certain promising connections in my network and now looking forward to my time at the campus.
If you have MBA in your mind, then put your doubts to rest and go for it.
Although there have been posts above regarding how MBA will be beneficial in the longer term if not shorter term, but I want to assure you that it will be beneficial in the shorter term as well. I know the pay scales in PSU Banks and have an idea how much you might be earning right now, and trust me on that, you may see an 80-100% increase in your salary after MBA. And don't worry about your experience, because experience is certainly appreciated during placements. The recruiters value the experience that you will bring to their organisation, because they are looking for leaders, not labourers.
Along with the skills that you will gain, the networking will be of immense help while making career decisions. The learning that you will get at an MBA campus cannot be described in words here, and can only be experienced when you will at the campus as a part of the cohort.
If you still have any qualms, I will be happy to help.

Hi Sonalirele,

Not sure if you applied last year but if you didn't, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't apply. :-)

Good luck!
