Hi all,

I am posting for a friend of mine who is applying to a PhD program in accounting and has been invited for an interview on campus. Now is this interview different from an office visit/2nd interview when going for a job? anyone with experience with a phd interview? any suggestions on what my friends need to focus in order to prepare well for the interview? and also how are his chances of getting in ? given the fact that he's been invited on campus, i guess its kinda like a 2nd round interview ?

any suggestions?

He should be prepared to answer any Q's related to his SOP, as well as any other Q's of motivation/interest in a PhD.

The fact that they are inviting him (I'm assuming here that the school is paying) means his chances are good. Either he is competing with a small number of people on a shortlist, or they are close to giving an offer and want to meet him as a sanity check (real person consistent with paper profile). In any case, there is a good chance they are going to also be doing a sales job on their dept.

I agree with bauble. I wouldn't go as far as to say this is a done deal but I think your friend's chances are very good. Many schools don't have a specific number of "open" spots for incoming students, so they might invite anywhere from 2 to 5 students (in each field) for a campus visit, and then admit 2 (or all 5) if they look like fine people, regardless of what the other invitees did. So some of the pressure is definitely off.

It is also good to prepare to address "weaknesses" in your profile. For instance, low GPAs, being out of school for some time, etc. While addressing them well may not get you in, but if you don't explain clearly, it may raise certain concerns.

I agree that the chances seem quite positive with the campus visit invitation. Keep us posted of the outcome.
