Hello, everyone.
I’ve always planned to get a PhD in economics, but recently I started a research position at the University of Chicago Booths accounting department and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. I’m considering applying to accounting PhD programs and am wondering what tier of schools I should be looking at. I would like to go into academic research so I would like to get into the highest ranked department I can. I asked the professor I worked for but since he hasn’t worked on the admissions committee before and came from the consulting track he doesn’t really know either.
My application:
- GMAT: Haven’t taken yet, consistently get ~750 on practice exams. Don’t know how well that translates.
- BS Economics, Mid ranking large state school in Virginia.
- GPA: 3.69, includes large number of math classes which I did ~fine~ in with a 3.2 average A
and CS(including 400 level classes) which I got a 4.0 in.
- Work experience, had summer research internships with my home schools economics department doing research. Additionally, currently working full time at the University of Chicago Booth as an RA doing accounting research.
-LOR, I know that the professor I work with right now as well as the economics professor back in Virginia would both give me extremely strong letters of recommendation as I will have done research with both of them for two years. Additionally, I have a professor in the CS department who I did some research with separately who would also write me a letter of recommendation but probably not as strong since I only worked for him one semester.
-Research interests, corporate reporting, tax evasion.
-Relevant information, I’ve never taking an accounting class.
In short what type of schools do you think I should aim for? I have a rough idea of where I could land going into economics since that’s been my focus for the last four years but I’m struggling to find good information on class profiles for accounting PhD programs since they are so small.
Posted from my mobile deviceYour profile is excellent. I feel you have a very good chance at the University of Chicago Booth itself; and I feel it is the topmost program in the world. I feel you must apply to the top ten programs.
