New Poster Here,
So I am applying for my PhD after my MBA and I have a lot of questions. Hoping some people here might have the answers.
1. Is there any source for PhD program rankings? I have seen quite a few for MBA's and schools as a whole, but I have not seen any for PhD programs. I would like to get into a 'top tier school,' but is there a list for these schools. More specifically a list for the schools specific programs. I am looking to get a PhD in either Finance or Economics (or Financial Economics lol), and am looking for the best places to go. And where not to go
2. Does an MBA make you more or less desirable as a prospective candidate? I did well in my MBA (3.5 GPA) and did even better in the classes I want to get a PhD in (3.9 GPA), but do these things make you look like a better candidate? I have been told that having an MBA will help me afterwards in getting a job beyond being a professor, but I have no idea if I should highlight this as a section on my application.
3. What kind of research is good to put on these applications? I have not participated in scholarly research. I have done research at my current company, however I have no idea if that is acceptable to put on an application.
4. How important is it to be close to where the institution is located? I live in KY and as far as I know the top schools are not near me at all. Is this a detractor from my application?
5. How high of a GMAT does one need to get into the top tier schools? I have a 650 now and I am retaking the test to see how much higher I can get. Also does the GMAT work like the SAT and ACT with the scoring? The ACT and SAT take the best scores of each sections, of all previous tests in order to send the best possible picture of yourself to the school. IE. If I took the ACT 3 times and my over-all scores were 29 32 29 (Not my real scores but an example), but in each one of those tests I received a 36 on one of the sections (the first time it was english, second math, third science), The school you sent the scores to would receive a 36 as your total score. Does the GMAT work similarly or is each test a stand alone and sent as is?
If anyone knows the answer to any of these or has random advice to give a prospective PhD applicant before I apply please let me know.
THANKS!
