I got a request from
carcass to list some info on schools offering PhD in Business in Australia and what are the requirement.
Which universities offer a PhD in business? There are over 30 universities in Aus and pretty much every university has a business school or a business faculty offering a PhD in Business!
For masters research, there are options for a MPhil or a Masters by research in Business/finance/marketing etc.
For masters coursework degrees, most of these schools offer a MBA or Masters in business/marketing/finance etc.
Some of the top universities for Business degrees are:
Admission requirementsGMAT required for most PhD degrees (except Melbourne University as far as I know)!
Even for MBA / Masters, most universities do not need a GMAT (except for AGSM and Mebourne university)!
However, that does not mean that admission is easy.
Academic requirements for a PhD entry would require some sort of a business related degree with a research component as part of the degree. Typically it has to be through one of the following:
A four year undergraduate degree in related discipline, with significant research in final year of the degree; OR
A strong research Masters degree in a related discipline; OR
An equivalent academic qualification with suitable experience as determined by individual universities
The GPA requirements vary from one university to other
In addition to the above, the student has to submit a
research proposal to the respective universities as part of the application process.
One has to first check what type of research is conducted at a particular university and then check if one can find a supervisor.
This is generally the difficult part because the topic you are interested in researching, might not be of interest to the university and vice versa.
Even if you find a university and a research topic, finding a supervisor is not always easy as professors may already have a number of PhD students whom they might be supervising and may not be able to add more research students under them.
Funding:The best part of a research degree in Australia for
domestic students is that it is fully funded by Australia's Research training scheme, also known as RTS
https://www.education.gov.au/research-block-grants In other words, if you are an Aussie citizen or PR, you do not have to pay any fees for a PhD or a Mphil
Unfortunately,
international students cannot get funding through RTS, so they will have to pay full fees, but many scholarships are available at different universities that you can explore through. Universities will generally cover travel and expenses related to research conferences and paper presentations, and can also offer stipend for tutoring and related assistance.
Duration:For full time students, the duration is typically 3 to 4 years.
For part time, it is 7 to 8 years.
Progress:Post admission, how one conducts research and completes their degree varies depending on the university. Some universities might have some coursework component attached to the degree in the first year. After the coursework component are completed, students would typically have to submit progress reports to supervisors every semester followed by a fina[quote]l thesis.
Graduation: Unlike many countries, note that a viva or a thesis defence is not commonly required in Australia for a PhD!
Instead, the thesis will be evaluated and scored by 3 or 4 reviewers (generally experts in the field with one or more PhDs) in a blind review process.
These reviewers would have to be outside the university where one is studying, and a majority of them would even need to be outside Australia.
