I have a query on the basic concept used in Cistern problems-->
Suppose x fills a tank in 'a' mins. Y fills the tank in 'b' mins. And Z empties it in 'c' mins.
Now the net work done in 1 min when all the pipes are together : (1/a+1/b) - 1/c
And time to Fill/Empty the tank = 1/ net work done in 1 min.
Now, the time (to Fill/Empty) is for the COMPLETE tank assuming that when the inlets where opened the tank was empty.. right??
what if we have a problem in which tank is - 1) completely full, and then the 3 inlets (as mentioned above) are open. 2) Or the tank is 1/3 rd full
I think in case 2), we can find the time to empty the complete tank. and then as 1/3 is already full we can find the time required to empty the remaining 2/3 = 2/3 x Time to empty complete tank.
Is this correct?
and what in case1)??
