planning a career change - technical to financial

I've been an analytical chemist in the pharmaceutical industry for a little more than 5 years. My experiences, albeit limited and small in scope, managing my investment portfolio have been enjoyable. I'm contemplating a career change so that my employment experience develops the skill-sets I am interested in developing to better manage my personal investment portfolio.
Right now I am reading about three possible career paths in the financial sector: accounting, finance or actuarial. One of the questions I am trying to answer is how common it is for actuaries to become involved in the administration of the reserve. If this is not a common career path for actuaries, then no matter how good a fit my 27 graduate level semester hours in math is with the actuarial career, maybe a different career choice is warranted if I want to be involved professionally with investments.
I'm enrolling in some business and accounting courses at a community college to learn some general business background. Some of the threads I have read here stress the importance of having a plan before beginning a graduate level business education. This sounds like an excellent idea. What are some of the questions I should be asking myself as I take some business classes at the community college?
I am looking forward to reading advice from other more experienced people here on this forum. Thank you.
