52. I got C because first half talks about the lien laws then in the middle transition of
"Lien laws frequently had unintended consequences, however,
thwarting the planter fantasy of mastery without
slavery."
53. A. The passage does not talk about expanding landholdings.
54. D. In the passage it states,"The newly freed workers, seeking to become
self-employed tenant farmers rather than wage
laborers, made direct arrangements with merchants
for supplies."
