“Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a new location. Even in the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the regional average. It is the industrial center of the region, and historically it has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In addition, Helios is attempting to expand its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development of innovative technologies.”
The author’s argument states that corporations should consider the city Helios when looking for new business opportunities or new locations. As a support of this argument the author claims that Helios is the industrial center of the region and has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs in the past. The author also believes that the city’s low unemployment rate during the recent recession is a positive factor. This argument is problematic as he fails to consider the different types of industries and their various degrees of suitability to the city.
The Author believes Helios to be a suitable city for the relocation of corporations but does not take into consideration the different types of corporations. Corporations are of various types, Healthcare, Service, software etc. We have to take different factors and requirements into consideration while dealing with different types of industries. Let us suppose a software corporation wanted to set up a company in the city of Helios. It needs to have labor skilled in the usage of computers. Given that the majority of companies in the past dealt with manufacture and industry, it is highly unlikely that the labor are skilled in computers.
Secondly, the author does not state the type of region or surrounding regions of Helios which is a very important consideration. This may adversely affect corporations who are thinking of branching out to Helios. For example, if there are rumors of a tsunami around the corner and Helios is in a coastal region Helios is not an ideal choice for relocation.
Another problem with selecting Helios as an ideal location, is the size of the available work force. Due to the low workforce available, the companies requiring large amount of workers will have a problem. The corporations would have to either buy off employees from other corporations or do without. To buy off workers from other companies the corporations would have to pay higher than average salaries to the workers. As a result Helios is not a economically viable place for corporations to set up a branch.
In other words, the author has not succeeded in providing compelling reasons for selecting Helios as an ideal place for relocation. Nor has the author provided compelling reasons for Helios as an ideal location for branching out. In fact there are more disadvantages than advantages for selecting Helios as a location.
