A GMAT score of 700 is competitive. You also have some research experience. This is good for you.

You will need good essay(s). These should be very detailed, but brief and to the point.

Marketing PhD in general and consumer behavior in particular are extremely competitive. These are popular fields and literally thousands apply for one to three positions. Admission offers are also based on fit and availability. You need some amount of luck, but of course, this is not in your control.

PhD applicants are expected to shortlist schools based on their own judgements. Requiring others to do the work will not present good signals. In other words, you should mostly do the work yourself. Good luck!

Hi fellow GMATians :)

I hope you all are doing well!

I am interested in pursuing a PhD in Marketing (Consumer Behavior) I have earlier given GMAT and have a GMAT score of 700, undergraduate GPA 3.74. No working experiences, but have had worked as a research assistant in a psychology for two years, and am working on two research project currently.

Can you guys suggest the colleges I should target for a PhD in marketing? I’m not sure if my GMAT score is enough to apply for Ph.D programs in the US. I also don’t have a clear idea of how competitive I am, so I’m not sure what type of school I should be looking at. Could someone with some experience please help!

Thank you so much in advance and hoping for some valuable inputs.
Anybody else looking forward to pursue a PhD in Marketing; would love to connect and discuss this more.

Sincerely,
Jacob

Hi Jacob,

A GMAT score is as competitive as your research interest. 700 is good enough. I know people with 750 in GMAT, who could not secure a place in any PhD programs in schools of their choice... and it had mostly to do with their weak research interests.

Consumer Behaviour is extremely vast... as you must know from your current RA and research. Also, you must have developed some ideas around what you want to explore in your PhD. Try to develop that and find out who works in that area. Try to connect with them and try to bounce off your ideas with them. If they show interest, latch on and apply.

It helps if you develop a research proposal (in fact, it is required in many schools as part of your application). In PhD, you should target highly published professors, and not the schools (as most schools have similar kind of facilities, unless you go for really shady ones).

Hope this helps. All the best.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer, it really helps thank you! I have heard from other people that generally applicants shouldn’t contact professors directly, is that true? Or was I mislead.

Thank you so much for your recommendations! I am currently in the process of looking through schools are professors’s work to find ones that fit my research interests. I just wanted to ask one question, when you talked about essays did you mean the personal statement? Thank you in advance!

That is not a very sound advice. A little networking will go a very long way. That way you will understand your fit in the program, and research interest that aligns your interest. Indeed, not all professors would reply to your mail, but enough will. Either way, it will not 'hurt' your chances of getting into the PhD program.
