Plenty of people apply to & get into b-school without having an undergrad degree in business, and there are definitely plenty of example of applicants getting in whose career has been more technical rather than business focused. So I wouldn't assume that you can't get in to b-school based on those reasons. That said, you are coming from a very tough demographic -- Indian males with a technical or engineering background are the most overrepresented demographic when it comes to b-school applications, and they're also a group that tends to have very high GMAT scores. If you do apply to b-school you'll want to aim for schools where you are 20-30 points above the average GMAT score, since that's where most of the Indian applicants will be -- and that's the pool you'll be compared against. The details of your work experience are critical as well. Even if you don't come from a business background the adcom will want to see that you've driven meaningful, and ideally quantifiable, impact at work.
Your post-MBA goals are critical as well. The adcom not only want to know exactly what you hope to do in the ST & LT (target title & 2-3 target firms) but also what you hope to accomplish in those roles and why that is your passion. Product manager in a tech firm is the #1 most common goal for your demographic followed by consulting. That's not to say you can't get in with those goals, but if you have more unique ones that will help you stand out. Post-MBA goals are critical since they are the foundation for your why MBA/why our school argument. You need to articulate the 3-4 skill gaps you need to fill via b-school to achieve your career goals.
Career goals will also determine if the MBA really is the right degree for you or if another grad degree might be a better option. It's tough to say for sure which path makes sense for you without knowing more about you -- and it's also hard to say why you haven't gotten in yet without knowing where you applied or how strong your essays, LOR & resume were. If you want to reach out to us we can definitely give you some more specific direction. Just email Claudia at
