The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen
foods:
“Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become
more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day
service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And
since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to
minimize costs and thus maximize profits.”
ESSAY
In its Annual report Olympic foods a processor of frozen foods, argues that based on its long experience in the field it is able to minimize cost and maximize profit. Its argument is filled with flaws and weak comparisons in its annual letter to share holders.
Olympic Foods believes that the costs of processing food will go down based in its expereince. That is not neccessarly true, cost can be calculated by a number of different factors. fixed and variable cost are different types of ways to calcuating cost. While it may be true that expereince can help find different ways of lowering cost doesnt mean that all expereinced indivduals will be be able to do so.
Moreover, Olympic Foods describes how color film processing cost are related to and its principles can be applied to the processing of food. It was wrong and shows a weakened comparsion between two different processing systems that dont relate. It can stengthen its arugument by collecting data and comparing its food processing with other food processing machineries.
Overall, Olympic foods can show and provide other more effective methods of lowering production cost and maxiumizing wealth. providing the arugment experience is the way to lower cost lacks evidence and support.
