“Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they
become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for
five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of
food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our
long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits."
My AWA responce:
The analysis of the argument is flawed in many ways as it made a generalization that overtime the costs of processing will go down and provided some proofs on an industry that is not relevant to the food industry and it quoted that the rates of the products of olympic foods would go down on its 25th birthday without even talking about the processing cost effectiveness of it, and finally the expectation that long experience will minimize the cost is highly questionable .
The first sentence makes a vague statment that the cost of processing would go down with the increased efficiency of the company on the products its supply, this might be true but not in all cases as the cost is not dependent on the effectiveness of the organisation but on several other factors such as salaries of its employees, rents, fuel or electricity bills and several other factors, so with this vague statment we cannot guarentee that the cost of processing would go down as sometimes it can go in reverse.
The second sentence tells about the color filmprocessing as an example and tries to compare it with the food processing industry, this argument casts a serious doubts as it is comparing Lion with an ant, There can be a lot of technological changes in the film processing such as change from reel to memory card and the introduction to the digital photography and the varying range of printers based on the persons requirement, but in the case of food industry not much can be changed, the pizzas, burgers, cheese are there 25 years ago and are there now also, so we cannot compare color processing industry with food processing industry, so the statement "The same principle applies to the processing of food" does not justify itself with the example given in the previous sentence.
Olympic food is celebrating its 25th birthday next week and so its long experience will enable it to lower its cost and increase profits cannot be justified with the examples given, had it provided some details such as the reduction in the man power and increased in automation in certain products it manufactures, the reduction in fuel charges, lower inflation in the country, cheap availability of labor, less transportation cost would have justified more than to compare it with some other industry.
Finally the conclusion of the argument cannot be considered certain as it can be true or false based on the above mentioned statments, we need more proofs to understand whether it is correct.
