ARGUMENT
"The producers of the forthcoming movie 3003 will be most likely to maximize their profits if they are willing to pay Robin Good several million dollars to star in it - even though that amount is far more than any other person involved in the movie will make. After all, Robin has in the past been paid a similar amount to work in several films that were very financially successful."
MY RESPONSE:
The author of a recent column in a popular entainment magazine argues that the producers of an upcoming movie called 3003 should be paying Robin Good several million dollars to star in the movie. The author states that this would most likely maximize the profits that the producers will make from the movie. The only evidence that the author provides to support this claim that in the past Robin Good has been paid similar amount of money in several highly financially successful films. Although the author's claim hold some merit it is flawed and contains several questionable assumptions that need to be clarified.
Most conspicuously, the author simply states that all the financially successful movies in the past that Robin Good has been a part of were successful only because of him. It is entirely possible, however, that all those movies had other popular actors in leading roles who contributed to the success of those films as well. Moreover, in addition to the quality of the cast the financial success of movies largely depends on the quality of plot as well. Accordingly, the author should clarify if there were any other causes for the success of those movies in the past.
Additionaly, the author has provided no time frame regarding the past work of Robin Good. The author has assumed that since past movies that Robin Good was a part of were successful all his future movies are likely to be successful as well, as it could very well be possible that his style of acting and the movies that he as a part of were much more popular with the older generation and not so much wih the younger generation. The author fails to provide any information to support the claim that Robin Good is still popular with movie watchers.
In conclusion, the argument that the upcoming movie 3003 will be a financial success if Robin Good is to star in it is poorly supported and makes number of critial assumptions. Not only does the author assumes that Robin Good was the sole reason that made his past movies successful, but he also preproposes that his past success will make his future movies successful as well. In order to make this argument more convincing the author needs to provide a lot more information about these assumption. Therefore, the argument in its current form stands unconvincing and deeply flawed.
