Blocking adult material from children
“Nations should cooperate to develop regulations that limit children’s access to adult material on the Internet.”*

Children are the pillars of a nation. As rightly said by Jawaharlal Nehru”Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders”. Government has a major role in shaping the children with social responsibility, leadership quality, moral and ethical values. It is the responsibility of the government to provide the right platform and ensure children develop these qualities. The internet is a worldwide computer network accessed by all age groups containing both adultery and non adultery content. In spite of different social culture across nations, all nations want to limit children’s access to adult material on the internet.
Adult and other objectionable materials are easily accessible in internet for minors. With rapidly increasing number of adult websites, blocking /censoring those websites becomes highly impossible. Adult content can be restricted by content providers themselves by proper age verification systems. But its effectiveness is questioned. Example: In 2007 in Germany, the federal court ordered pornographic site provider to implement a highly effective Age control system which adequately restrict access to minor.
On a voluntary basis, Internet Content Rating association(ICRA) rates the website based on its adult and pornographic content. This helps to easily block that content from children, at the same making it easier for adults who want to see those contents.
Usually minors have a tendency to look beyond their limit. This could easily addressed by parental guidance. Minors should be made aware of the possible consequences. There are tools available for Parental control. Example Apple Safari provides Parental control feature: It helps parents restrict websites which they do not want their children to see. Rather than blocking websites, we could list Allowable websites. Initially all websites would be blocked. Children can access a new website only after approval from parents.
In addition to these, it is helpful to have Hotlines where surfers can complaint about any ojectional content if they come across. International Association of Internet Hotlines has been very successful in this respect. In united Kingdom, Internet watch foundation (IWF) is a hotline system designed specifically to address problems related to child abuse, pornography access by children, harmful content.
Most of the developed countries have the relevant regulations to block adult content to minors. Developing and under developed countries also should come up with regulation and join with Global committee to block adult content access to minors. Illegal content is not only harmful for minors but also for adults. So all nations should join together and come up the best approach to censor those contents. Individual nations at the same time has to revise their cyber crime laws and develop Internet Industry standard
