“Over the past decade the restaurant industry in the country of Spiessa has experienced unprecedented growth. This surge can be expected to continue in the coming years fuelled by recent social changes. Personal incomes are rising. More leisure time is available. Single-person house-holds are more common and people have a greater interest in gourmet food as evidenced by a proliferation of publications on the subject.."
Answer
This article in the travel section of the newspaper states that social changes in the country of Spiessa will support the growth of the restaurant industry in the next years. Stated in this way, the article makes several assumptions that are unlikely to be true, in which case the argument is seriously compromised. For example, it assumes that things will not change over the next years. Although, the article introduces evidence that have some merits, a number of defects undermine the claim.
First, the argument assumes that as people earn more money, they are likely to increase their expenditures on restaurants; this evidence does not support the conclusion correctly. Perhaps the increase in revenue is due to a rising in the country’s inflation rate. The article could have been much more clear and specific if it had referenced specific information such as the motivation for the growth in incomes and further details about their increase for the next years.
Second, the article assumes that the same factors that supported the increase in the restaurant industry will remain stable for the next years. Stated in this way, the article fails to consider that these factors may change in time due to some economic and social factors. Had the argument presented a logical reasoning for this notion, it would have been more convincing.
Third, the article fails to explore differents economic factors in its analysis, such as the tourism industry, which has a direct correlation with the increase in the restaurant industry. The argument could have been much more clear and specific if it had referenced any specific information about the tourism industry, which could explain the continuous increase in the restaurant industry.
In conclusion, because the article makes several unwarranted assumptions and fails to provide strong facts, it fails to to make a convincing case that the restaurant industry in the country Spiessa will keep growing as it did so in the past decade. The article would be much more convincing, if it had presented strong economic facts and predictions that are directly correlated with the restaurant industry such as: tourism and income.
