Hey everyone,
I just took my GMAT and got a 690 (44M and 40V)
I have a 2.9 GPA from one of the best schools in the middle-east (major: Economics)
I have 3 years of experience in Abu Dhabi (UAE) working for the crown prince court (much similar to the White House) specifically in the office of strategic affairs (which acts as think tank/ internal management consultants for the government)
During the 3 years i was able to receive the 1st early promotion ever given in the court
My recommendations will come from some pretty influential people
I am targeting HBS, Wharton, Chicago, and Columbia for fall of 2012
Any advice? should i retake the GMAT?

If you think you can get over 720, I think you should retake your GMAT. At 690, you're below average and below that "psychological" 700 score. Couple that with a less than stellar undergrad grade, you'll be facing an uphill battle for the schools you listed. If I were you, I'd also broaden my school list a bit, depending on your end-goal. HBS, Wharton, Columbia, and Booth are all top of the top and even with a 720, it's still a crapshoot for most people.

Since you are aiming for top schools, a score above 700 is desirable. Looking at the 2012 class profile at Harvard, the students scored in the range of 550-790 in their GMAT and the median GMAT score was 730. Similarly at Wharton’s MBA class of 2012 the students scored in the range of 650-770 in their GMAT and the median GMAT score being 720. Hence a higher GMAT score is advisable if you are aiming for top institutes abroad.
Also the GMAT alone won’t determine your chances of admission; your work experience plays a vital role as well.
Since you are coming from government strategic affairs background this would help you in differentiating your profile from other candidates. So make sure you highlight your academics and beyond well in your application and your profile is differentiated from the rest.
Generally most of the applicants have good 4-5 years of work experience. Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So if you can show that in 3 years you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you could still put in a strong set of essays and if not then you should try to improve your GMAT score.
