“The owners of the Cumquat Cafe evidently made a good business decision in moving to a new location, as can be seen from the fact that the Cafe will soon celebrate its second anniversary there. Moreover, it appears that businesses are not likely to succeed at the old location: since the Cafe’s move, three different businesses—a tanning salon, an antique emporium, and a pet–grooming shop—have occupied its former spot.”
Discuss how well reasoned... etc.
In the business section of a local newspaper, author claims that owner of Cumquat Cafe has made a good decision in moving to a new location since Cafe is will soon celebrate its second anniversary at the new location. Author further supports his conclusion by mentioning that businesses are not likely to succeed at the old Cafe’s location as three different businesses have occupied the Cafe’s old spot since the Cafe has moved out. Stated in this way, argument fails to mention several key factors, on the basis of which it could be evaluated. Author has made couple of assumptions for which there is no clear evidences. Therefore, Argument is weak, unconvincing and flawed.
First, most conspicuously, author erroneously assumes the reason behind shifting of Cafe to the new location was the poor revenue and profit generation by Cafe at previous location. Author readily assumes that since the Cafe is celebrating 2nd anniversary at the same new location, Cafe must be doing good business there otherwise it would have not stayed there for two years. Moreover, author fails to present any evidences that shows Cafe was not doing good business at previous location and doing better business at the new location. However, it might be possible that Cafe had been doing good business at previous location and shifted to new location because of some other issues such as insufficient area for the cafe, safety reason etc. Cafe might have shifted because owner wanted to shift the cafe to a new shopping complex where it can attract more customer. The actual reason of shifting may be ascertained by the interview of owner and staff. Nevertheless, the author would have made his conclusion more convincing, if he had compared the revenue and profit of the cafe at both the locations.
Secondly, author readily assumes that the occupation of cafe’s old place by other three different businesses-a tanning salon, an antique emporium and a pet-grooming shop in the spam of two years shows the location is not good for doing business and businesses are making loss that is why they are moving their businesses from this location. Author fails to support his assumption by any suitable evidences. However, the three businesses might have doing good there and might have shifted the location because of some other reason such as change of ownership, rent issues etc. On the other hand, it might also possible that the three businesses were making losses there because the location is not suitable for the above three businesses and forced owner to shift the business. Therefore, the awareness of actual reasons for the shifting of business is imperative to claim that the location is not good for doing businesses. Had the author presented the result of the survey of the owner and staff of the three businesses asking the reason behind their relocation, the conclusion of the argument could have been strengthen.
In conclusion, because of various assumptions made by author while making the claim, the argument is weak and flawed. Not only does author assume that Cafe is doing better business after shifting since Cafe is going to celebrate its 2nd anniversary but he also presuppose that the three business, which occupied the location after Cafe, have been shifted because they are not doing business. In order to make the argument strong and convincing, author needs to compare the profit of Cafe at both new location and old location and ascertain the actual reason behind the shifting of other three businesses by conducting a survey of the owners and staff.
